Studio of Emily Birsan

A parallel passion to singing for me is teaching voice. I have taught music since I was 14 years old, teaching piano to the budding pianists in my neighborhood after being mentored by my piano teacher on how to teach. During my years pursuing degrees in Performance and in Opera, I have taught and led music in churches, music schools and held a private voice studio.

My voice teachers are Karen Leigh-Post (6 years) and Julia Faulkner (11 years). I believe in a balance of traditional chiaro-sciuro italian technical exercises, vowel tracking/modification, low larynx exercises and breath motivated singing. Everyone has something to say with their music/voice, we just have to get all the added tensions out of the natural voices’ way.

I am available for career coaching (undergrad and masters students of voice) and foundations pre-college (age 14-19).

This photo was taken at a masterclass I taught at UW-Whitewater last year. I have also taught masterclasses with Madison Opera, Lawrence Conservatory, UW-Madison School of Music, and Chicago Summer Opera.
